Christmas Party Theme Ideas for Work & Friends | TP Events & Styling
Christmas Party Themes That Turn Heads (Work or Play)
Every year we all hear, “What’s the theme gonna be?” At TP Events & Styling Whitsundays, we live for this question. We’ve pulled together our favourite Christmas party themes (the ones we already stock) with styling tips, ideas, and how we love to make them easy for you.
Let’s get this holiday party planning rolling 🎄
Why a theme matters
- Creates cohesion. When your furniture, props, colours, music and dress all speak the same language, the night flows.
- Takes pressure off you. Once the theme is locked, the rest is a matter of layering.
- Gives guests direction. They’ll know what to wear, expect, and get excited about.
- Makes it memorable. A striking theme sticks in people’s minds (and their socials).
Our go-to themes & styling ideas
We challenge you: find a theme we can’t work with. We dare you. Here are eight themes we already stock and love playing with — plus ideas to bring them to life.
| Theme | Vibe / Mood | Styling Directions | Extras to Elevate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greatest Showman / Circus Glam | Bold, theatrical, joyful | Dramatic drapes, trunks, striped tents, vintage signage, deep jewel tones + metallics | Add aerial silk displays, performer photo spots, big show props |
| Gatsby / Roaring 20s | Luxurious, glitzy, art-deco | Black, gold, geometric lines, feathers, mirrored surfaces | Jazz band, flapper outfits, champagne towers, feather centerpieces (tall ostrich feathers work especially well) (Arts and Classy) |
| Wild West | Rustic, adventurous, playful | Hay bales, barrels, lanterns, rope, dusty tones | “Wanted” boards, country music, mechanical bull or lasso games |
| Disco / ’60s-’70s | Funky, dancefloor ready | Mirrorballs, neon lighting, retro vinyl elements, bold colour palette | Disco DJ, themed cocktails, dance-off contests |
| Masquerade | Elegant, mysterious | Jewel tones (emerald, plum, sapphire), candles, masks, drapes | Mask bar, roaming masked performers, dramatic fabric swags |
|
Pirate / Nautical (A must in the Whitsundays) |
Playful, immersive | Ship wheels, treasure chests, nets, anchors, weathered wood | Pirate games, rum bar, map clues, “walk the plank” area |
| Bond 007 / Spy Glamour | Sleek, black tie, intrigue | Black, white, silver, mirrored pieces, subtle luxe | Casino tables, secret missions, lounge music |
| Casino / Vegas Night | Glamorous, buzzing | Blackjack, roulette, playing card motifs, red/black/gold palette | Play money, live dealers, prize setups |
Party planning tips (that make your life easier)
-
Dress code first, then decor. Let your invite tell guests how dressed-up to get. If it’s black-tie, then stick with luxe. If relaxed, choose a more playful version of the theme.
-
Photo moments = must. A themed backdrop or “set” is gold—people love snapping and sharing.
-
Lighting can make or break. Use coloured washes, uplighting, gobos (projected patterns), fairy lights or spotlighting to enhance mood.
-
Stick to a palette. Two or three main colours from your theme prevent visual chaos (e.g. in Gatsby: black, gold, white).
-
Sensory layers. Music, scent (citrus, pine, vanilla or subtle smoke), textures (velvet, sequins, feathers) all elevate the experience.
-
Games + activities. A themed quiz, casino table, dance-off, or secret mission (Bond, Pirate) will keep momentum.
-
Move through spaces. If the space allows, create zones (cocktail lounge, dance floor, photo corner) to break up the night.
-
Leave room for surprise. Small unexpected touches (a roaming performer, confetti drop, mask reveal) go a long way.
If you’re planning for a corporate or work crowd, be mindful of inclusivity (not everyone will dress extravagantly), comfort, and clear boundaries on alcohol or behaviour.
Many modern office parties are shifting from purely booze-heavy events to ones focused on interactive experiences. The Guardian+2teambuilding.com+2
